Millennials’ mouths are agape after a designer just put a hefty price tag on a beloved 2000s arts and crafts creation.
“Miu Miu lost his rabbit after thinking about selling $480 keychains,” groans a young adult on Twitter-born X of the Italian label’s new line of luxury accessories.
Gimp ropes – also known as Scoubidou, boondoggle or craft lace to hand-eye coordination hobbyists around the world – are small DIY creations, handcrafted through a specialized knitting technique.
Early years kids spent lazy Saturdays and bonding sessions at summer camp threading and tying colorful plastic yarn together to make friendship bracelets, necklaces and backpacks or key charms.
But now, the popular pastime that cost crafters less than $5 to create — not counting the precious time it took to fix the base of the mini structure box — is selling for nearly $500 on Miu Miu’s website.
And General Yers has bent it out of shape.
“$480 for a gimp is crazy,” one naysayer spat over X. “I’ll go to Michael’s and make a keybox right away.”
“Companies started commercializing childhood entertainment and it’s so wild,” another said in part. “A $480 gimp box keychain?????? WTF.”
However, despite the buzz online, the pricey frippery, praised by Miu Miu for its “lively and distinctive style” and offered in leather or fabric, is currently sold out.
Twisted jingle is far from the only nostalgic thing that has recently been resurrected from its Y2K grave as an ultramodern must-have.
Tamagachis, the tech toys that taught 1990s toddlers how to raise virtual pets, are now all the rage among Gen Z’s twenty-somethings.
Whippersnapper Zoomers, too, have taken a hard turn toward snapping pictures with digital cameras and listening to chart-topping songs on tape.
And while Miu Miu’s expensive clothing is causing a bit of controversy from a fraction of jaded millennials, some less jaded people within the demographic seem to appreciate the fashion house’s high-end temptation for their once-fashionable work.
“Miu Miu just unlocked a quintessential childhood memory with this chain,” said one fan.
